I’ve got another Top 5 for you all this week, and it’s one that I’ve wanted to do for a while. Nobody knows how to hype up an audience quite like WWE, and that’s best illustrated through their pre-match promo packages. Through their excellent editing, gripping storylines, and bad rock music, they show the buildup to a big match perfectly. These have always fascinated me, so I’m counting down my top five favorites today. Let’s begin.
#5: Seth Rollins vs Triple H- WrestleMania 33
The story here wrote itself. Rollins was formerly a protégé of Triple H, and he was eventually pedigreed by his mentor to cost him the Universal Championship. Naturally, this led to a match at WrestleMania, and the promo package here is great. With the best song out of all of these, by Metallica, it pumps me up. As soon as Rollins drops his crutch and it starts playing, you know you’re going to want to watch this match.
#4: Elimination Chamber- Survivor Series 2002
The first installment of one of WWE’s most beloved match types, this features an all-star lineup for the World Heavyweight Championship. Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho, Booker T, Rob Van Dam, and Kane all vowed to win the belt and make history in this new match. In no other circumstance would I enjoy the song in this promo, but here, it just fits. I have no idea why, it just does. Saliva and WWE were a perfect match back in the day.
#3: John Cena vs Shawn Michaels- WrestleMania 23
Taking a break from rock, how about some choir action? A big match between these two was long overdue, and this video package did its job of hyping it up. This ‘Mania had two great title matches, the other being Batista vs Undertaker. I nearly put that promo on here instead, but the slow build to this song just fits perfectly.
#2: Daniel Bryan vs Triple H- WrestleMania XXX
Last one with HHH on here, promise. Daniel Bryan was being pushed in 2013, but it paused due to the short-lived return of Batista. As he won the Royal Rumble and was going to face Randy Orton for the WWE Championship, fans were not happy. They wanted Bryan to have his WrestleMania moment, and they didn’t want the former Evolution members to have a snooze-fest of a main event. Thankfully, WWE listened, and they booked Bryan to face Triple H at the start of the show, with the winner being added to the main event. Bryan won both matches, and the rest is history. This video shows his journey well, even If I’m not the biggest Imagine Dragons fan in the world.
#1: Steve Austin vs The Rock- WrestleMania X-Seven
Okay, this may be an obvious choice, but it really is the best. Limp Bizkit may be the only band that’s a better fit for WWE than Saliva, as evidenced by this promo. This rivalry just speaks for itself; two of the all-time greats headlining what many consider the best WrestleMania ever (their second of three ‘Mania meetings). Just watch.
