Here’s Something Weird: Simpsonwave

Simpsonwave, or S i m p s o n w a v e, is… interesting. It’s a video subgenre where vaporwave music is playing with clips from The Simpsons. However, the clips usually have an “a e s t h e t i c” purple tint and VHS filters over it to show a dream-like atmosphere. These two combined may seem like an odd combination, and it is, but it actually kind of works.

Vaporwave is essentially trippy electronic music, and it sounds nice. When I think of electronic music, I think of stuff like Daft Punk and LCD Soundsystem. Vaporwave introduced me to a new side of it, which I can appreciate.

You can probably sense why people feel like they’re dreaming when listening to this. Popular feelings demonstrated with vaporwave include nostalgia, tripping out, insomnia, and depression. A wide range, indeed, but the music just shows those emotions.

Now, where does The Simpsons come into play here? Well, that HOME song was put to a short clip from it in a Vine a few years ago. From there, this genre just took off. I guess since cartoons are relatable for a lot of people, like these feelings, they’re easy to mash together. To illustrate the dream aspect, the purple tint and VHS filter were added to the formula. Similar mashups with other cartoons are also out there on YouTube. Here are some examples.

While I can see why someone would see this as a joke or think it’s kind of creepy, I have an admiration for Simpsonwave. It’s editing is amazing, it gives obscure music some attention, and it has an emotional connection with people. It may be strange, but it’s interesting. I suggest you check it out and see for yourself.
