Thursday night several rap artists blessed us with new music, but I’m going to speak solely about my favorite.
Playboi Carti’s Die Lit is his 2nd full-length solo project and debut album. Just over a month and a year ago he released Playboi Carti his debut mixtape, he has also made several appearances on the A$AP Mob collective’s Cozy Tapes series. Die Lit is 19 tracks of everything I could’ve ever asked it to be and more. Standing at 57 minutes the album features some of hip-hop’s best; Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, Nicki Minaj, and Young Thug. It also features a few newer acts; Pi’erre Bourne (who produced most of the album), Gunna, Redd Coldhearted (who I still haven’t entirely figured out the identity of), and Young Nudy. The single from the album was called “Love Hurts” and was the Travis collaboration.
Trying out new flows and distancing himself from the mumble rap title Carti deserves respect even from anti-new wave critics. Taking after his mentor A$AP Rocky Die Lit is very different, very unique. Like Rocky’s last album (still waiting on the new one) it might take an extra listen or two to truly appreciate, but I’m absolutely in love with it.
Every song except for the Chief Keef featured “Mileage” is amazing in my opinion, but my favorites are the Uzi assisted “Shoota” (which is included in this week’s (Weekly Waves playlist) or the phenomenal “Pull Up” that pairs the hardest beat of 2018 with slick bars for a dreamy summer anthem. The whole album will probably stay in my rotation through at least the summer, I’m very impressed with the project as a whole. So far this is definitely the front runner for album of the year, maybe next week I’ll break down the albums we have so far. Go listen to Die Lit on Spotify or Apple Music and tell me what your favorite Pi’erre beat is.
As always, thanks for reading.
